My First Lecture on Albert Einstein

I hope to show that a careful reading of the works of Einstein from 1905 to 1955 may provide us a much deeper understanding of the mysteries of quantum mechanics than reading the “interpretations” of all other physicists and philosophers of science combined.

Is it possible that the most famous critic of quantum mechanics actually invented most of its fundamentally important concepts? Just because he did not like the indeterminism and chance he discovered in quantum events does not mean Einstein should not get credit for his amazing insights. In my book in progress, My God, He Plays Dice!, I hope to make Einstein as famous for quantum mechanics as for his relativity theories.

Besides quantizing light energy and seeing its interchangeability with matter, E = mc2, Einstein was first to see many of the most fundamental aspects of quantum physics – the quantal derivation of the blackbody radiation law, nonlocality and instantaneous action-at-a-distance (1905), the internal structure of atoms (1906), wave-particle duality and the “collapse” of the wave aspect (1909), transition probabilities for emission and absorption processes that introduce indeterminism whenever matter and radiation interact, making quantum mechanics a statistical theory (1916-17), the indistinguishability of elementary particles with their strange quantum statistics (1925), and the nonseparability and entanglement of interacting identical particles (1935).

It took the physics community eighteen years to accept Einstein’s light-quantum hypothesis. He saw wave-particle duality fifteen years before deBroglie, Schrödinger, Heisenberg, and Bohr. He saw indeterminism a decade before the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. He saw nonlocality as early as 1905, presenting it formally in 1927, but was ignored. In the 1935 Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paper, he added nonseparability, which was dubbed “entanglement” by Schrödinger. John Bell’s theorem has put Einstein’s original insights front and center in today’s concept of “quantum information” and quantum computing.

William James, first webcast in my Philosophers and Scientists series

In yesterday’s lecture on Free Will, we saw how Bob Kane’s Oxford Handbook of Free Will, second edition, mentioned that my two-stage model of free will might be found in the 19th-century writings of William James.

We continue today with James’ work on consciousness, the human mind, and the critical contribution of chance to biological evolution and human creativity.

James insisted on the reality of alternative possibilities in our future, and that these must sometimes be the result of chance. He attacked both “hard determinism” and “soft determinism” (today’s “compatibilism“), which he called a “wretched subterfuge.”

James wrote:

“The stronghold of the determinist argument is the antipathy to the idea of chance. As soon as we begin to talk indeterminism to our friends, we find a number of them shaking their heads. This notion of alternative possibility, they say, this admission that any one of several things may come to pass is, after all, only a roundabout name for chance; and chance is something the notion of which no sane mind can for an instant tolerate in the world.”

My First Free Will Webcast – The Standard Argument

For many years those opposing human free will have put forward a simple two-part logical argument, a so-called two-horn dilemma, against it.

First, if determinism is the case, the will is not free.

Second, if indeterminism and real chance exist, our will would not be in our control, we could not be responsible for random actions.

We will analyze this standard argument against free will  and see why so many writers on free will mistakenly identify it with moral responsibility.

I have been practicing these past couple of weeks delivering one-hour lectures between 3 and 4pm weekdays.

Welcome to the Information Philosopher.I’m Bob Doyle, webcasting from my iTV-Studio in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

I’m hoping to reach philosophers and scientists around the world to help solve some great problems in philosophy, in physics, in biology, and in psychology.

I also hope to reach any of you wondering about the deepest nature of reality and our place in the universe.

We live in the information age, but I find that few philosophers or scientists understand the nature of information – an abstract quantity I will claim is the stuff of thought.

Information is neither matter nor energy.

Information needs matter to be embodied, in our brains for example, and it needs energy to be communicated, like this lecture coming to you over the Internet.

But matter and energy are conserved quantities. It may be hard to believe, but the total amount of matter and energy today is the same as there was at the beginning of the universe nearly 14 billion years ago.

And if the stuff of the material world is just a fixed total amount, what can possibly explain all the evolutionary change that we see, the amazing new things emerging under the sun?

I’ll explain those cosmological changes by showing that information and order in the universe have been increasing since the beginning of time, despite the second law of thermodynamics and the increasing entropy, which destroys order.

Change is simply the arrangement of matter, the atoms and molecules, into what I call information structures, like the galaxies, stars, and planets.

The stars are passive objects under the complete control of physical forces like gravity.

But living things, you and I, are dynamic growing information structures under our own control.

I’ll show that we are forms through which matter and energy continuously flow.

And I’ll show it’s information processing – from the DNA in our cells to the thinking in our minds – that controls those flows of matter and energy.

Information is the modern spirit, the ghost in the machine, the mind in the body. It is our soul, and when we die, it is our information that perishes. Only our matter remains.

Information philosophy can also explain mysterious aspects of quantum physics like the two-slit experiment, the collapse of the wave function, and entanglement, which claims a cat can be simultaneously dead and alive, that one object can be in two places at the same time, and that information can travel faster than the speed of light.

I hope to show “through Einstein’s eyes” that such “spooky action at a distance” is simply impossible….

My I-Phi Blog is Active Again

For the past six years I have added no new posts to the I-Phi blog, but that is about to change.

In those years I added hundreds of new web pages on philosophers and scientists to my Information Philosopher website, without first creating “Reading…” pages for them on this I-Phi blog. I have also added hundreds of pages and thousands of words on some great problems in philosophy and physics that I think have plausible solutions using the methods of information philosophy rather than traditional verbal arguments.

Those thoughts on possible solutions to great problems I published last year as my second book, Great Problems in Philosophy and Physics – Solved?

The first great problem discussed in that book was metaphysics, which in Aristotle’s great work actually contained a cluster of problems, many ignored by modern philosophers who famously dismissed such problems. P. F.Strawson famously described metaphysics as “panicky.” He said it includes “uncaused causes, immaterial minds, noumenal selves, prime movers unmoved” and the like. I therefore expanded my research into those problems and published it as Metaphysics: Problems, Paradoxes, and Puzzles – Solved?  I also built a new website at, to distinguish my work  as a metaphysicist (based on the physical sciences and information philosophy) from that of traditional metaphysicians.

This blog is about to change because I am adding a new way to disseminate my ideas beyond my web pages and printed books. The new way is webcasting, especially live streaming of my lectures to YouTube and Facebook. For the last few years I have refused invitations to travel to distant philosophical conferences, but offered to speak at such events by Skype. The saving in time has been immense. My 45-minute talks in Barcelona, Spain and Milan, Italy required two overnight travel days in addition to the three conference days. Now I just  send webcams to conferences so I can listen in and ask questions remotely about presentations by others.

My new plan is to create a blog post on each webcast lecture, with web links and with a searchable description, keywords, categories, and tags.  I will embed the videos in relevant pages on Information Philosopher, but this I-Phi blog will now serve as the master directory for all my online lectures.
